about

Gregg Hill began writing songs in seventh grade, but he never really thought of himself as a performer — until he moved to New Orleans. Inspired by the Big Easy and other artists who call it home, Hill embarked on yet another new chapter in a life that has contained many, honing his live-audience entertaining skills — while forging relationships with those artists. The singer, guitarist and pianist then recruited two of the city’s finest — bassist/vocalist Roland Guerin and drummer Doug Belotte — as the rhythm section for his latest album, Bayou St. John, released in September 2023.

Named for the region that connects Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River, Bayou St. John is also the place where Hill wrote most of the album’s eight tracks. Each conveys the easygoing nature (and accomplished picking) of this folk-tinged Americana artist; but they’re also something more: masterfully painted tableaux capturing moments in time with charm and emotional resonance.

reviews

Bayou St. John is an astonishing accomplishment, and truly a wonder of the ages.
— Americana Highways, Bill Bentley (September 2023)

‘Places in Between’ is timeless song, showcasing Hill’s fine songwriting and trademark country-folk. Over the warmth of a low, pulsing bass, Hill’s bright strum and tender vocal melody, supported by the voice of Joy Clark, are engaging and make for an easy, classic sound. In Roland Guerin’s video, we see Hill deliver a heartfelt performance.
— Andrew Frolish, Americana-UK (September 2023)

Gregg Hill’s songs are an echo of James Taylor‘s style of folksong: humble, mellow and true.
— Melissa Clarke, Americana Highways (July 2023)

Gregg Hill’s singer-songwriting is classic yet keenly modern, mixing choice folk-country spanning decades and featuring his superb guitar work.
— Alan Cackett

The easily digestible eight-tune set is an enjoyable, intimate listen spotlighting one man singing his stories, accompanied by his masterful, intricate fingerpicking.
— Dan Willging, Offbeat Magazine, Bayou St. John Review (Oct. 2023)

Vents Magazine
Gregg Hill has a winner on his hand with this fifth album and you won’t regret giving it your time. It’s a solid album that doesn’t need to beat its chest in order to garner your attention. Instead, its humanity is what pulls you in and holds your ear rather than flashy or otherwise unnecessary touches along the way.” (Jennifer Munoz)

WPKN
“This is a wonderful record. It invites you on to it’s porch, and shares the intimate secrets of Gregg’s New Orleans’ life. Full of love, humor and charm. By the end of the record you feel that you and Gregg are life-long buddies. Songs that feel like conversations, tunes that leave you humming them, and a warm glow in your soul. Bayou St John is where I want to live.” (Simon Hunter, Chairman WPKN)

Mecca Music Record Review
“Despite writing his own songs since the seventh grade, Hill did not truly feel like a musician until he moved to the city five years ago. Now, he has released his new album, Bayou St. John — a timelessly charming love letter to the simple life and, ultimately, New Orleans itself.” (Mikayla McGrory, September 2023)

Hollywood Digest
“Directness and intimacy play in the performance’s favor; Gregg Hill comes across as if he’s in the room with you.” (Garth Thomas)

WWOZ
“This album has got a really comfortable feel, like two guys hanging out on a porch.” (Murf Reeves, Program Director)
